Tuesday 6 December 2022, at 4pm A CHRISTMAS CAROL – free Zoom from Siobhan Clarke, Guide Lecturer, Historic Royal Palaces.
The celebration that we know today, of Christmas trees, cards and crackers, was popularised by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert but they had considerable help from Charles Dickens. 'A Christmas Carol', with its themes of family, charity and goodwill, encapsulates the spirit of its time. This lecture compares the Victorian family Christmas with its Georgian 'Christmas Past': an adult festival of fun, frolics, gambling, balls and parties. In the 20th century 'Christmas Yet to Come', the Royal family continued to influence our celebrations with the King's Speech which evolved into an important part of Christmas Day for many in Britain and around the world. Registration details to follow.
