WALK No 154
Co-ordinator: Duggie Fairbairn (020 8979 8305)

Wednesday 16 February
'The Talbot' PH, Ripley High Street, 10.30am

as RVP

Norman & Lois Andrews
Information & Menu details

The original name of the pub was The Dog, becoming The Talbot by 1570. According to which dictionary you consult, a Talbot is a broad-mouthed, large-eared hound now extinct, usually white, or a liver and white coloured fox terrier. This historical Inn has retained its charm and character throughout the years; there has even been reported sightings of a friendly resident ghost!
The favourite seat is the legendary ‘Nelson’s settle’, his chosen spot when entertaining Lady Hamilton. I have arranged for tables to seat 16 of us in the Emma Hamilton restaurant. Original beams and inglenook fireplaces provide a warm welcome. There is the chance to savour some real ales, and of course a good selection of wines, spirits and soft drinks. There is an extensive home cooked lunch menu and bar snacks.

The Talbot is situated on the southern side of the High Street on the B2215. The easiest route is to join the A3 at Cobham and travel towards Guildford. Leave the A3 at the turning for The R.H.S. Garden at Wisley and after passing under the A3 turn immediately left onto the B2215. On entering Ripley, The Talbot is on your left about 1/3 of the way along the High Street. There is plenty of parking available at the rear of the pub.

The Walk

Turn right out of the pub, cross the road and soon turn left on a bridleway, carry on to enter woodland and cross two foot bridges over a stream to finally emerge in Mill Lane. Turn left into Mill Lane and Ockham Mill is then almost immediately on your left with the millrace on the right. Walk past the mill and follow the track round to the right to find a gate straight ahead. On reaching the River Wey cross the bridge and continue to the Wey Navigation, here turn right for about 50 yds and then turn right, opposite a footbridge to enter Wisley Golf Course. The public right of way is well marked to eventually reach the Wey Navigation at Pyrford Lock. Turn left and follow the footpath to Walsham Lock. Turn left to cross the weir and carry straight on to emerge on Ripley Green with The Talbot just ahead left in the High Street.
